Myanmar officials have provided extensive clarification on national efforts to dismantle online fraud and online gambling networks during a press briefing this week, with detailed comments from senior representatives of the State Administrative Council and the Myanmar Police Force.
Mid-briefing, officials also acknowledged tensions along the Myanmar-Thailand border. Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun said some shelling incidents claimed by Thailand could not be fully denied, yet he alleged that certain KNU elements deliberately fired rounds into Thai territory to create misunderstanding between the two countries. He stressed that bilateral border mechanisms were functioning at township, district and regional levels.
Questions from journalists focused on cooperation with groups in Kayin State and the role of individual members of ethnic armed organisations. Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun said not all organisations were involved and that "bad elements" must be separated from compliant members. He reaffirmed that online fraud cases would be eradicated and that action would be taken wherever offences occur.
Police Brig Gen Kyaw Lin reported that 107 online gambling cases had been pursued in 2025. From 2023 to 2025, authorities blocked more than 2,000 social media accounts linked to online gambling and disabled over 2,300 SIM cards. Officials also confirmed ongoing trilateral cooperation between Myanmar, Thailand and China as cross-border investigations intensify. Police Lt Gen Win Zaw Moe said coordinated operations were under way to dismantle networks in border regions and confirmed legal action against the KNU under the Anti-Terrorism Law and the Unlawful Associations Act. He added that Myanmar would continue joint action with ASEANAPOL and Interpol when appropriate.
