Indonesia Sees Dramatic Drop in Online Gambling Activity Amid Crackdown

Indonesia’s war on illegal online gambling is yielding significant results. New government statistics reveal a sharp decline in both financial transactions and active participants.

According to the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), online gambling transactions in Q3 2025 dropped to Rp155 trillion (approx. US$9.27 billion)—a staggering 57% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Player Numbers in Free Fall

The human impact is equally dramatic. PPATK data shows the number of active online gamblers plummeted from an estimated 9.7 million in 2024 to just 3.1 million in 2025. This exit of over six million users suggests that the government’s combination of digital barriers and financial screening is effectively deterring the public.

A Validated Strategy

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, characterized the data as credible proof that the administration’s policies are working. The decline is attributed to a coordinated ecosystem-wide crackdown, including:

  • Rigorous monitoring and access blocking.
  • Strict law enforcement.
  • Disrupting the infrastructure supporting illegal platforms.

Sustaining the Pressure

Despite the success, the government is not backing down. Minister Hafid emphasized that supervision will intensify with a focus on "quick reaction" systems for illegal activity reports and tighter restrictions on payment channels. The goal is clear: ensure the millions who left the industry never return.
