The British Gambling Commission has confirmed a new set of technical requirements for Gaming Machines following a consultation involving more than 1,000 responses from industry stakeholders, consumers and other organisations.
The reforms will introduce enhanced user management tools and clearer session information while updating technical standards for the design and operation of new machines.
Greater Access to Session Information
Under the new requirements, new Category B Gaming Machines will provide users with access to information including elapsed session time and net position, helping them better understand their activity during each session.
New machines will also introduce tools allowing users to set time and monetary limits, with the majority of these requirements scheduled to take effect from June 30, 2027.
Technical Standards Focus on Responsible Design
The updated standards also introduce several changes to game design.
Machines will no longer be permitted to celebrate outcomes where the award is lower than the amount committed, while features that allow users to reduce the time before a result is revealed will also be restricted. Similar design principles have previously been introduced for online games.
Following consultation feedback, existing machines will generally be excluded from the new requirements, reducing the technical and financial burden of upgrading older equipment.
Phased Implementation from 2027
Implementation will take place in stages. A new definition of a Gaming Machine session will take effect on March 30, 2027, followed by most of the updated Gaming Machine Technical Standards on June 30, 2027.
Requirements relating to certain staff alerts will receive a longer implementation period, with the final deadline set for October 3, 2028.
The changes reflect Britain's continued move toward a more transparent and user-focused Gaming regulatory framework, while giving operators additional time to adapt their technology and operational systems.
